What Is The Difference Between SPDT And DPDT Switch?

2025-03-13

Have we often heard of SPDT switches and DPDT switches? In fact, this is a professional name for circuit switches in the electronics industry. Currently, there are four types of micro switches: SPST (single pole single throw), SPDT (single pole double throw), DPST (double pole single throw), and DPDT (double pole double throw). This article mainly talks about the more common SPDT switches and DPDT switches, so that you can better understand their differences and advantages and disadvantages.

What Is A SPDT Switch?

A SPDT (single-pole double-throw) switch is a single-pole double-throw switch that has one input (common) and two outputs, which can switch between two current paths. This is the most common type of circuit that can switch between two functions. For example, as shown in the figure below, the switch of the SPDT circuit is connected to the green light circuit in normal mode, and the green light is on; if the device fails at this time, the detection switch switching circuit is triggered, and the input end will be connected to the red light circuit. The red light is on to indicate a device failure.

For the sake of abbreviation, the three terminals are generally represented by C, NC and NO (explained below). When the SPDT switch is in one state, C is connected to NC; when the switch is switched, C is connected to NO. This enables bidirectional control of the circuit.

  • C (Common): Common terminal
  • NC (Normally Closed): Normally closed terminal
  • NO (Normally Open): Normally open terminal

What Is a DPDT switch?

A DPDT (double-pole double-throw) switch is a double-pole double-throw switch that has two input terminals (common terminals) and four output terminals, and can control the switching of two independent circuits at the same time. This can be applied to more complex circuit switching and electrical control. Below I will use the forward and reverse control of the motor as an example to explain its working principle.

The motor is in the forward rotation state under normal circumstances (as shown in the upper part of the figure below). At this time, the positive pole of the power supply is connected to C1→NC1 (connected to the positive pole of the motor), and the negative pole is connected to C2→NC2 (connected to the negative pole of the motor). At this time, the motor rotates forward. When we press the switch (as shown in the lower part of the figure below), the circuit switches, the positive pole C1→NO1 (at this time, the positive pole of the motor is connected to the negative power supply), C2→NO2 (at this time, the negative pole of the motor is connected to the positive power supply), so that the circuit direction is reversed, and the motor rotates in the opposite direction.

Need Micro Switches for Industrial or Automotive Projects?

If you are researching switch technologies, you can first explore our sealed micro switch solutions and automotive micro switch applications to understand typical designs and use cases.
If you are already sourcing for a project, our engineers can recommend suitable SPDT or DPDT micro switch models based on your environmental, electrical, and lifecycle requirements.

The Difference Between SPDT Switch And DPDT Switch

The main difference between SPDT and DPDT switches lies in the number of control circuits and the switching method. The following is a detailed comparison between the two:

Comparison Items SPDT Switch DPDT Switch
Number of poles Single pole (1 input terminal) Double pole (2 input terminals)
Number of throws Double throw (2 output terminals) Double throw (4 output terminals)
Number of control circuits Can switch 1 circuit Can switch 2 circuits at the same time
Typical applications Single circuit mode switching, signal conversion  Motor forward and reverse control, power switching
Applicable scenarios Small electronic equipment, home appliances, industrial control  Complex circuits, dual power control, bidirectional motor drive

As can be seen from the table, SPDT is a single circuit function switch, such as SPDT basic micro switch, which is more commonly used in the function conversion of household appliances. DPDT dual circuit control is more complicated, such as DPDT limit micro switch is more suitable for circuit control of industrial equipment, and also requires higher current and voltage load capacity.

Advantages And Disadvantages of SPDT Switches

Advantages Of SPDT Switches

  • The circuit design is clear and easy to understand, the function switching meets the needs of most electrical appliances, and maintenance is more convenient.
  • The design is simple, with less materials, suitable for mass production, and reduces manufacturing and procurement costs. It is suitable for switching a single circuit and is suitable for scenarios that require one-way conversion.
  • Easy to install and supports multiple installation methods, and is easy to integrate into various electronic devices and household appliances.
  • It has a wide range of applications, the circuit is simple and easy to install, the cost is low, and it has strong applicability.

Disadvantages Of SPDT Switch

  • Single function, unable to switch multiple circuits, only supports single circuit dual-state switching, not suitable for complex multi-channel control.
  • The circuit function is relatively simple and cannot be applied in professional equipment circuits, only suitable for low-end products.
  • Installation requires certain professional knowledge, and it is difficult for ordinary users who are not familiar with the user to repair it by themselves.

Applications Of SPDT Switch

  • Household appliance control: used for mode switching of electric fans, heaters and other equipment, such as low-speed/high-speed mode conversion.
  • Lighting circuit switching: can switch between different light sources, such as white/yellow light selection of table lamps or brightness adjustment of LED lights.
  • Audio device input selection: used to switch different audio signal input sources in speaker systems, such as AUX/Bluetooth mode.
  • Automatic detection and alarm: used for equipment status monitoring. Once a fault is detected, it can switch to the alarm circuit to remind the user.
  • Battery circuit management: used for rechargeable devices to switch between charging mode and discharging mode.

Advantages And Disadvantages of DPDT Switches

Advantages Of DPDT Switches

  • Supports dual circuit synchronous switching, can control two sets of independent circuits at the same time, and realize more flexible circuit control schemes.
  • DPDT switches can withstand high power or special requirements and can be used for highly specialized equipment.
  • Enhance the reliability of the system, the dual circuit design can make a safe backup circuit for the equipment, even if one circuit is damaged, there is a second backup circuit to replace it.

Disadvantages Of DPDT Switch

  • Higher cost, requiring more investment than other circuit designs, increasing production costs.
  • The circuit is more complex, which increases the difficulty of development and application, requires more rigorous testing and installation, and may increase the project cycle.
  • The number of contacts is large and susceptible to interference. Multiple contacts increase the possibility of signal interference and contact resistance, affecting stability.

Application Of DPDT Switch

  • Motor forward and reverse control: DPDT switch is widely used in motor control, and realizes motor forward and reverse control by reverse switching current direction, such as changing the rotation direction of the motor in power tools, electric vehicles and other mechanical equipment.
  • Dual power switching:used in UPS power supply system or other equipment that needs to switch two sets of power to ensure continuous power supply.
  • Signal selection and switching:widely used in communication equipment to select between two signal sources, such as audio and video signal switching.
  • Automation equipment control:in automation control system, used to switch different working modes or circuit paths.
  • Circuit reconfiguration:in some complex circuits, DPDT switch can be used to reconfigure the circuit and change the flow direction of current or signal.
